Wondering if a dose of protein might be good for your hair? Here are some answers to what it is, how it works and why you should use it.
Protein is used to add strength, shine and hydration. It reduces breakage and gives your hair support….aka bounce! Even in tiny amounts proteins, also known as peptides or amino acids can make a noticeable difference in your hair.
But-all proteins are not created equal. Some are larger and some are smaller. These tiny particles fill in the gaps or damaged areas and slow water loss from hair.
Many times, when people tell me that their hair can’t tolerate protein, they are using the wrong type or the wrong amount for their hair.
Signs your hair might need more protein:
- Damaged? Weathered by sun, swimming or wind exposure?
- Regularly heat styled?
- Weakened by using baking soda or soap bars to shampoo your hair?
- Thinned more significantly on the ends than in the middle?
- Dry-even after deep conditioning or oil treatments?

Different Proteins Have Different Attributes:

Signs of too much protein:
- Hair can become stiff, tangled, sticky, brittle or can feel dry and poofy.
- Hair can become overly soft, limp, flat or loose it’s curl.
Using protein too often, or using a product that is too concentrated for your hair can cause negative effects. Which can be confusing to have both stiffness and limpness at the same time. Wheat, soy, oat, vegetable and quinoa proteins are all larger in size than our options and may cause symptoms of too much protein.
Sometimes, you need to give your hair a rest and a reset with protein free products.
