Wondering Which Protein is Best for Your Hair?
High Protein, Low Protein, No Protein?
Understanding How Proteins Work in Hair Care
Is Protein Right for Your Hair?
Wondering if your hair could benefit from a dose of protein? Let's dive into what protein does, how it works, and why it might be a game-changer for your hair.
Why Protein Matters:
Proteins add strength, shine, and hydration to your hair, reducing breakage and providing the support your hair needs for that bouncy, healthy look. Even in small amounts, proteins—also known as peptides or amino acids—can make a noticeable difference. However, not all proteins are created equal. Their size and structure affect how they interact with your hair, filling in gaps and damaged areas while slowing down water loss.
Is Your Hair Crying Out for Protein?
Here are some signs that your hair might need more protein:
- Damaged or Weathered: Exposure to sun, swimming, or wind can take a toll on your hair.
- Heat Styled: Regular use of heat tools can weaken hair fibers.
- Weakened by Harsh Shampoos: Using baking soda or soap bars might strip your hair of essential moisture.
- Thinning Ends: Hair thinning more at the ends than in the middle is a sign of weakening.
- Persistent Dryness: If your hair remains dry even after deep conditioning or oil treatments, it may lack the necessary protein to hold moisture.
If you’re noticing breakage or a lack of hydration, it’s time to consider incorporating protein into your hair care routine. Here's how the different types of proteins we use can help.
The Power of Protein: Types and Benefits
-
Vegan Silk Protein
Our vegan silk protein, derived from algae, is a powerhouse for improving elasticity and resiliency. It links hair fibers, restoring moisture balance and enhancing your hair's overall strength and flexibility.

Honey Protein
Honey protein is all about shine and manageability. It improves luster, helps with wet combing to detangle hair, and reduces static, leaving your hair smooth and radiant.

Debunking the Protein Myth
Many people tell me that their hair doesn't "like" protein, but this might not be entirely true. The issue often lies in the type or combination of proteins being used. Most brands formulate their products with a mix of large and small protein particles, which can sometimes overwhelm the hair. At Flourish, we take a different approach. We offer single proteins per product, allowing you to target your hair’s specific needs more effectively. The only exception is our UV + Heat Protectant, which requires both honey and quinoa proteins for optimal performance.
Signs of Too Much Protein:
While protein is beneficial, too much of it can have the opposite effect. Watch out for these signs:
- Stiff or Tangled Hair: Overuse can make hair feel sticky, brittle, or stiff.
- Overly Soft or Limp Hair: Your hair might become flat or lose its natural curl if it’s overloaded with protein.
- Confusing Symptoms: Experiencing both stiffness and limpness can be a sign of using the wrong protein or too much of it. Larger proteins like wheat, soy, oat, vegetable, and quinoa can be too concentrated and cause these issues.
Sometimes, your hair needs a break from protein to reset and recover its natural balance.
Need a break? Shop Deep Conditioning.
Our Vibrant + Violet Purple Shampoo + Conditioner is also protein free so it can be used by all hair types. Be sure to loop one of our protein options into your routine that match your hair goals.
