How to Cleanse, Condition, and Use Protein Without Overdoing It
Healthy hair care isn’t about rigid rules — it’s about understanding how your hair responds and supporting it thoughtfully over time.
If your hair feels heavy, dry, dull, or inconsistent, the issue often isn’t the products themselves — it’s how you’re cleansing, conditioning, and rotating treatments.
Let’s break it down.
1. There Is No Single “Right” Way to Wash Your Hair
One of the biggest myths in hair care is that everyone should wash their hair the same way. In reality, different wash methods serve different needs, and finding the one your hair responds to best makes all the difference.
Common approaches include:
-
Lather, rinse, repeat
Helpful if you deal with buildup, styling residue, hard water, or wash infrequently. -
Reverse cleansing (condition first, then shampoo)
Ideal for finer hair, dry ends, or anyone wanting softness without sacrificing volume. -
Pre-shampoo treatments
Used periodically to support scalp health, remove buildup, or restore softness.
There’s no “better” method — only the one that works best for your hair, water, and lifestyle.

2. Why We Recommend Alternating Pre-Shampoo Treatments
Instead of doing everything every wash, we encourage an alternating approach. This keeps hair balanced and prevents over-treating.
Here’s how that typically looks:
✨ Week A: Pre-Shampoo Oil Treatment
Used when hair feels:
-
Dull
-
Tangled
-
Dry through the lengths
-
Coated from environmental exposure
Apply the treatment to dry hair, comb through, allow it to sit, then shampoo directly over it. Add water, lather, and rinse — no need to remove it first.
This supports softness and manageability without leaving residue behind.
✨ Week B: Shampoo Booster Treatment
Used when hair feels:
-
Heavy
-
Limp
-
Less responsive to styling
-
Affected by hard water or mineral buildup
This step focuses on gently removing what doesn’t belong — without stripping the hair or scalp.
Alternating between these two prevents both over-cleansing and over-coating, which is where many routines go off track.
3. You Can Condition From Scalp to Ends (When the Formula Is Right)
Many people are told to keep conditioner away from the scalp — but that advice depends entirely on the formula.
Our daily conditioners are oil-free, meaning they hydrate and soften without coating or weighing hair down. Because of this, they can be applied from scalp to ends, especially for those dealing with dryness, sensitivity, or tangling.
Healthy hair starts at the scalp, and gentle hydration supports both comfort and manageability.
4. Protein Is Important — But It Works Best When Chosen Intentionally
Protein plays an essential role in hair health, helping reinforce the hair shaft, improve elasticity, and reduce breakage. But too much protein — or too many different proteins layered together — can leave hair feeling stiff or brittle.
This is why we formulate differently.
We use single proteins in our hair care (with the exception of our UV + Heat Protectant).
Each protein has its own character:
-
Honey protein → detangling + softness
-
Rice protein → lightweight volume + strength
-
Silk proteins → smoothing + flexibility
Using one protein at a time allows you to learn what your hair responds to — without overload. Many people benefit from ongoing protein support; the key is choosing the right one and avoiding stacking too many protein-heavy products at once.
5. Balance Is What Creates Consistency
Healthy hair routines aren’t about constant correction — they’re about rhythm.
That rhythm often includes:
-
Gentle cleansing most of the time
-
Periodic deeper cleansing when needed
-
Hydration that doesn’t weigh hair down
-
Protein chosen thoughtfully, not accidentally
When you understand why your hair feels the way it does, you can adjust — instead of starting over.
6. Let Your Hair Guide You
Your hair gives feedback through softness, shine, elasticity, and ease of styling.
If something feels off, it’s not a failure — it’s information.
Once you find the wash method, treatment rotation, and protein your hair responds to, hair care becomes simpler, more intuitive, and far more consistent.
The goal isn’t to follow a perfect routine — it’s to build one that works for you.
By alternating treatments, choosing proteins intentionally, and washing in a way that supports your hair rather than fights it, you give your hair the chance to stay balanced, responsive, and resilient over time.
