Why We Don’t Make Face Cream (And What to Use Instead for Sensitive Skin)
One of the most common questions we get in the shop is:
“Do you have a face cream?”
It makes sense—creams are the standard recommendation in most skincare routines.
But we’ve chosen not to formulate traditional face creams, and there’s a reason for that.
What’s actually in a face cream?
To combine water and oil into a cream, you need structure.
That usually includes:
- emulsifiers (often around 8–12%)
- waxes (like beeswax in simpler formulations)
- preservatives (to keep water-based products safe)
These ingredients aren’t inherently “bad”—they’re what make creams stable and shelf-safe.
But they do change how a product feels on the skin.
Why this matters for sensitive skin
For many people—especially those with sensitive or reactive skin—these structural ingredients can feel like too much.
Not always in an obvious way, but subtly:
- a heavier feel on the skin
- a coated or “sitting on top” sensation
- less flexibility in how products are layered
When your skin is already reactive, even small amounts of these ingredients can become noticeable over time.
A different approach to hydration
Instead of combining everything into one cream, we take a different approach.
We separate hydration into steps:
- water
- then oil
This allows the skin to take in hydration first—and then seal it in.
The step most people skip
Hydration doesn’t come from products alone—it starts with water.
That’s why we teach a simple method:
- splash your face with water 15–20 times
- fully drench the skin
- apply products while skin is still damp
- press hydration into the skin
This helps your skin actually hold onto moisture, rather than relying on heavier formulas to sit on top.
Why this works better for many people
This method gives you:
- more control over how your skin feels
- the ability to adjust based on the day
- fewer ingredients layered all at once
For sensitive skin, that flexibility often makes a noticeable difference.
What we use instead
After cleansing and drenching:
- Luminous Liquid is a lightweight oil serum designed to be applied to damp skin. It spreads easily, allowing it to move with the moisture already on your skin and help seal it in without feeling heavy or occlusive.Rather than sitting on top, it creates a soft, breathable layer that supports hydration while still allowing your skin to feel balanced and comfortable.
- Brightening Balm adds a more protective layer when needed. Brightening Balm has a softer, more melt-on-contact texture, created with olive wax instead of beeswax. It warms into the skin rather than sitting on top, allowing you to add protection without that heavy, coated feeling some creams can leave behind.
And during the day:
- Calming Facial Tonic Rosewater + B5 can be used to refresh hydration
- followed by a small amount of oil to lock it in
The goal isn’t more—it’s less interference
Traditional creams combine everything into one step.
We prefer to keep things separate—so your skin can take what it needs, when it needs it.
If you’re used to creams
You don’t have to change everything at once.
Try this:
- start with your usual routine
- add the drenching step
- apply products to damp skin
You may notice your skin feels more hydrated—with less product.
